Author's Interview with Kevin Roberts

First, before we move forward with our Authors Interview, I would like to start with an introduction.

1. Could you please introduce yourself to us?
Hello, I am Kevin Roberts—the author of The Foundational Strength Weight Management System—and creator of Foundational Strength Fitness Systems.
2. Congratulations on your book. So what inspired you to write this book?
The inspiration comes from the best teacher, neccesitation: trying to find a long-term, sustainable way to manage my own weight and stay on a diet without getting burnt-out after 30 days, and ending up looking for a new one to take its place. I've always been fascinated with health and longevity, including dietary experimentation of all sorts. Diets are great—I've always enjoyed seeing what works and what doesn't; leaving out the bad, and extracting the good. The problem is they do not last, and the body and mind lose the stimulus and we end up in a worse place than before because there's nothing to fall back into, aka another diet. Worst of all, counting calories is too serious for me, and I knew there was a way to do it without worrying. Life is too precious to be worrying about calories, right? Then, one day I was introduced to the concept of periodization. From then on, I periodized everything, including my dietary life and created the program; others as well for fitness and various studies. Periodizing my diets created flexibility, took away the guesswork and stress while providing sustainability—something most of us never find with diets. I knew I had a great program, and I wanted to share it with the world. If there was something better, I would not have had to create this one.
3. What is the book all about?
As the subtitle says: "A periodized, non-calorie counting dietary guide for the beginner and advanced dieteer." And yes, the word is d-i-e-t-e-e-r, not dieter. But I tell you, it is meant as a lifetime weight management tool. Not enforcing rules, but giving minimal standards that are easily met, providing guard rails to always fall back on—no matter what crazy diet you're on, or how bad the eating gets. This is the perma-diet solution.
4. Why did you choose this genre for your book?
As a certified personal trainer, and a health enthusiast myself—the genre is my life.
5. How much time did it take to complete this book?
The book took about 6-8 months roughly. However, is only a shortened 25-page workbook with the program included. There is also an extended 100-page dietary addendum yet to be released. The workbook is very helpful for clients I was working with, such as athletes—who don't have time to read a book—so I wanted to release it first.
6. What makes your Book Special?
This book is special because it provides an easily kept system that does not rely on counting calories and at the same time still lets the person partake in the diets of their liking—not throwing the baby (good part of diets) out with the bathwater (bad part of diets).
7. When is your second book coming?
I have many systems to be released with the programs already finished; I feel the Fitness Management System will be next and is most needed. If I could afford it, I would publish them all right now!
8. While writing did you get any writers block? What is the Tip that you will give others who are facing a writer's block?
I would say strike when the iron is hot. And when you get a good flow, you have to ride that wave until it's over. Don't attack uphill, and force thoughts. A great time to write is early in the morning if you wake up in the middle of the night. Also, to be noted are the physiological aspects involved: food, exercise, etc. I know for a fact my clearest, most concise, elaborate thinking comes on a fasted stomach (with coffee usually) after a workout. The hunter's mind is not to be overestimated and should be utilized for any writer in my opinion. Having proper nutrition is important and avoiding drugs too frequently that block acetylcholine in the brain (memory) and linked to alzheimers; such as antihistamines. There's a lot to a healthy brain and creative writing, but making sure our brains are working is an underlying must.

9. Apart from being a talented author, what are your other hobbies?
I enjoy working out and training for sports like motocross. Helping others is important to me; so self-study and continuing to be better physically, morally, and intellectually is very important in my life. But deep down inside, I am a racer and want to race anything with wheels as my ideal career choice. I also enjoy relaxing, deep thinking, writing, and body-boarding in the ocean.
10. Last but not the least, How did you feel, while giving this interview?
The interview and questions were welcoming and I felt comfortable the whole time.
